'Getting Ready for the Fair' by Somali Mukherjee

Getting Ready for the Fair

Mom, O Mom, please, tie my hair;

I need to look cute;

Daddy will take me to the fair

And buy me a flute.

I will ride and ride a lot there

On the merry-go-round;

My joy I will with you share

After I return from the fairground.

Mom, O Mom, why will you not go?

Please! I want both of you!

I will enjoy there the magic show;

Mom, please! I do love you!

You know I’m a little child;

I love eating every ice cream;

The chocolate syrup should be mild;

Of funnel cakes I do dream.

I need a beautiful doll;

With her I will always play;

I’ll go there to every stall;

I’ll have animals of clay.

I love eating those peanuts;

I’ll crack their shells and chew;

Those toy palaces and toy huts

Will be mine and always new.

I wish I would see my friends

Somewhere in the fair;

The happiness never ends,

Flying in the air.

I will have the water balls;

I will ride on the pony;

I will go to all the stalls;

Won’t it become funny?

Let’s go, Mom; let’s go, Dad;

Do not, do not be late;

The whole world I’ll have had;

Else, they might close the gate.
