Patriotism

“One should love one’s own country. We should fight for our country. We should love her always. However, we should keep in mind our country is our motherland. We should be ready to serve her, work for her and dedicate ourselves to her.”

Read the following story to learn how to be patriotic.

True Patriotism

Once upon a time, there lived a teacher in a city. He was Mr Dey. Next to his house, there lived a little boy who was a student in the same school.

On the Independence Day in that year, the little boy went to school much early. All the teachers and the students were going to observe the Independence Day together.

The Principal hoisted the flag with great honour.

Mr Dey was a celebrated teacher in that school. He was requested by the Principal to deliver a short speech on the significance of the day.

Mr Dey delivered a moving and praiseworthy speech indeed. Everybody clapped loudly after his speech.

The little boy, too, was there while the day was being observed with patriotic zeal.

The observation was over. Everybody came back to their respective homes.

After returning home, the boy was wandering on the roof of their house.

Suddenly, he came to notice that Mr Dey was wiping the floor of his room with one of the flags.

The little boy wondered why the teacher was doing so after delivering such a speech in the school. He immediately came downstairs and asked his mother about the matter.

His mother drew his close and patted on his head. Then she pointed to his forehead and said, “This is my true patriot.”

The boy asked, “But what about our teacher, Mom? Why did he say one thing and do something different?”

The mother smiled and said, “His patriotism is not true. However, yours is genuine. Do you know why?”

The boy shook his head.

Then she explained, “That’s so because he does not truly love his country. But you do love your motherland. That’s why you feel upset for this reason.”

The boy asked his mother, “May I go and protest? I need to advise him not to do so anymore.”

The mother nodded her head and took the boy to the teacher.

The boy told him politely, “Sir, I know that I’m not supposed to tell you these. Still, I must say that please give the flag to me so that I can honour the same.”

At first, Mr Dey disagreed. Right then, the mother requested him also. Thereafter, he thought something and gave it to the boy.

The boy took it, touched the flag and felt it. He drew it close to his heart and saluted it in front of the teacher.

The teacher felt really ashamed.
